Samuel’s Collection honours Yalumba’s founder Samuel Smith, his spirit of independence and conviction to invest in the land and make great wine.
VINTAGE CONDITIONS
The season got off to a wet start, winter soil water reserves allowed for healthy growth in the early stages of the growing season.
Spring rainfall totals were also above average and mild summer temperatures created an ideal ripening environment, allowing the grapes to reach full aromatic and flavour maturity while retaining good natural acidity.
TERROIR/PROVENANCE/REGION
Made from a collection of gnarled old bush vine vineyards planted from 1920 - 1965, these vineyards produce small quantities of fruit with a high concentration of flavours.
A range of terroir can be seen across the different vineyards, from sandy soils to sandy loam to red-brown earth over red clay.
Each parcel of fruit has individuality, creating intriguing complexity.
TASTING NOTES
Bright garnet in colour with great depth.
This wine is fruit forward yet savoury.
It starts with a complex bouquet of wildflowers, clove, sage, wild oregano and thyme with bergamot tea.
With time in the glass aromas of sour cherries, mulberry and cinnamon spice emerge.
This medium-bodied, juicy Grenache exhibits excellent fruit and spice, it is smooth and textural, supported by mouth-coating tannins.
