Mitchell Watervale Riesling 2020
The story of Watervale is one well worth telling with classic, intense citrus aromas and dry tangy flavours that come alive in the mouth.
Our Watervale Riesling is a refreshing wine of poise and balance with lees contact to soften the wine.
It finds enough roundness in the mouth to balance a pleasingly mineral and classically crisp, dry finish.
The vines for this wine were planted in 1962 by Peter McNicol Mitchell.
More than 50 years later Peter’s grandson Angus Mitchell continues to tend the vines within what is now the famed Watervale region, utilising many of the same techniques as his grandfather.
These old vines are grown on red loam over limestone soils and have always been dry grown, hand pruned and hand-picked.
No artificial fertilisers, pesticides or herbicides have been used in growing these grapes.
The 2019 vintage was picked early in March after hot and dry grown conditions throughout summer creating low yielding crops with intense, rich flavours.
Mitchell Watervale Riesling is crafted in the same traditional, low intervention style that has been used consistently for the past 40 years.
The vines are low yielding with small berries, but show a wonderful depth of flavour that remains consistent year on year.
The crop is hand harvested and treated carefully in the winery, where only the highest quality free-run juice is used.
The wine experiences a long, gentle fermentation with indigenous vineyard yeasts.
The wine is allowed to rest on the yeast lees for eight months, resulting in a textural, approachable wine that is characterised by its refreshing acid and by its finesse, elegance and balance.
